CodeLedger
Concept - 2023
CodeLedger was a concept for a platform designed to treat technical debt as a first-class financial liability. The goal was to bridge the gap between engineering reality and executive financial planning.
The Core Problem
Technical debt is often abstract. "Spaghetti code" or "tight coupling" means nothing to a CFO. CodeLedger aimed to translate these engineering issues into the universal language of business: money.
How It Worked
The platform proposed an automated engine to quantify debt into two metrics:
- Principal: The cost (time/money) required to fix the issue right now.
- Interest: The ongoing cost of ignored debt (reduced velocity, increased bug rate, cloud spend).
Key Features
- ROI-Based Prioritization: Instead of fixing everything, focus on high-interest, low-principal items first.
- The "Debt Balance Sheet": A dashboard for the CTO/CFO to track total technical liability over time.
- CI/CD Governance: automatically block PRs that exceed a defined financial debt threshold.
